Mr. Hart discusses and explains a skill, then draws a demonstration step-by-step on the upper page. He then invites you to try on the partially filled in page below.This programmed learning adds increasing skills as the student progresses through the book. I cannot speak about art students, but It is perfect for architecture and engineering students who want to bring drawings/plans to life with more than the usual "blob people". I wish all such books followed Mr. Hart's example.
I'm planning on making copies of the the diy pages so that I don't waste them when I mess up.
I absolutely love Christopher Hart drawing books! This book surpassed my expectations. I love that it has a magnetic closure so I can throw it into my bag and not have to worry about any pages getting dogeared. I also really like how you have the practice grid at the bottom of the page so you can practice drawing the example. The way the book is spiral bound makes it easy to work with, so it's not closing up on you while you practice you drawing. Mr. Hart makes learning new techniques easy to learn with his amazing teaching style. I love all of his books!

Full disclosure....I received a free copy of this to review. I don't have any ties to Mr. Hart but I have read a few of his books.That being said, this is a nice introduction. The way the lessons are laid out is really helpful in starting with the basics and adding in more difficulty and poses as the book goes on.One minor issue I have is the way the book is laid out. I personally don't like the vertical flipping of pages and the spiral top seems rather cheaply put together.Another small issue is the realism is on the low side. Mr. Hart is a well known cartoonist and comic style artist and it shows. For those looking to get into super realistic drawing, look elsewhere.All in all I would recommend it to the beginner looking to get started with figure drawing....as long as you understand this is not a course in realism.
If you want an easy- to- follow and easy- to- use workbook to learn how to draw figures this is the book for you. Spiral binding, magnetic closure and a smaller size make this book convenient to work in and to toss in a bag and bring along with you. The book comes with tons of lessons on drawing the human face and body and also contains dotted graph worksheets with each lesson so you can practice as you go along. The lessons are clear and detailed and go beyond the basic face and body structure by including lessons on different poses and how the various body parts adjust to the poses. Also includes tips such how to convey body language and adding depth to your drawings. Overall a very nice workbook!
This book is really good. I loved how simple it is, and the magnet in the cover that helps keep the book closed is awesome too. This book comes with practice pages as well. This book covers just about everything on the human body that deals with drawing: poses, position and expressions. This book even goes over the female figure. My downside is I feel the hands and feet aren't covered enough. Midway through, full body poses incorporate hands and feet. But even with this it doesn't feel like enough. And sometimes it's hard to go back to a page with out some sort of label or table of contents. Like in the bottom corner it could have a logo of the parts discussed: head, body, legs and arms. Besides the lack of discussion on the hands and feet, and the absent table of contents, this is a really good book. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in sharpening their drawing skills. Also behind the cover is something I think is unique. Male/Female figures, to show proportions between the two.
I love this new workbook by Christopher Hart! I love the magnetic closure on the cover. Keeps the workbook closed and secure when I put it in my bag so the pages don't get bent. The layout of the book is excellent with a skill presented on the top page and an are on the bottom page to actually drawn the book. You can also slip a sheet of drawing paper or Rhodia dot paper, over the practice are and hone your skills over and over, even after you have drawn on the provided dot paper. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson, so that by the end of the book you are able to draw complex human figures. I recommend this book to anyone looking to learn how to draw the human figure. This is the best step by step guide I have ever come across. So glad I got this book.
