I bought this book about 8 or 9 months ago, and I've found it to be a great resource. In one of the initial chapters, Farr has you take very simple body measurements to determine what kind of body shape you have. Subsequent chapters give detailed guidelines on how to dress and look great depending on your shape. I already suspected some of the information she gave, but it was nice to have a systematic explanation of what looks good and why -- and to have really detailed lists of what to buy and what to stay away from! She also includes plus-sized figures, which means that this book is really useful for a wide range of shapes and sizes.As some reviewers have mentioned, she does tend to assume that the reader has unlimited resources and can afford designer brands and custom-made clothes. She also does not include pictures or photos of clothes, as other reviewers also mentioned. Overall, though, there is enough practical, useful information in here to more than make up for these weaknesses.I've gone back to this book again and again for ideas, and really love it! The book is small enough to take with you when out shopping, but I actually wrote down a list of my do's and don't's on a 3x5 card and just keep it in my purse for when I'm out shopping. Highly recommended book!

Nothing new here, but perhaps I say that because I have so many other style books. It does include a comprehensive plan or outline to start a new wardrobe. Focus is on body type rather than any of the style archetypes such as classic, boho, etc. Which may or may not be helpful to some. I had previously read Shopping for the Real You (recommended!) Kibbe, Zyla, Stacey London's book (interesting and endearing and recommend this one) and Forever Chic (recommend). And others, so sad I still can't dress myself.So with all that read previously, this one did not have too terribly much more to add. Her discussion of different levels of women's fashion brands (luxury, bridge, fast fashion) and her suggestions on where to splurge and where to save was useful, but not too much different from anything that might be in INSTYLE or LUCKY. To be clearer, if I could have found my packing slip, I would have returned this.

I've bought a few style guides over the past year and this one has a little bit of a different slant. There's fewer specifics (buy THIS kind of shirt or THAT pair of pants) but I think that it's actually better at teaching you why certain clothes look good on you and why others don't. And that's really what you want from a style guide, isn't it? This book teaches you *how* to shop, rather than exactly what brands or specific items of clothing to shop for. You get guidance on determining how well your clothes fit, why most clothes DON'T fit well off the rack, and what to do about it.One thing I would add to the book if I could: actual photos of women wearing the right clothes next to women wearing the wrong clothes, so you could easily see what the author means when she's talking about the "almighty line." And photos to show examples of poorly fitting clothing, with another photo next to it of the same clothes, tailored properly for the wearer. I understand that it could make the book look dated very quickly, because clothing fads change so often, but I think it's important to give a visual explanation of the author's main points.

I am a Wardrobe/Personal Stylist and this book has very valuable information on learning more about personal style, as well as what looks great on different body types. I was wondering if the info provided would work today being that the book was published in 2004, but the content is very much relevant. It's gave me more confidence to dress different body types and the industry of fashion.

I think every woman should own this. It’s a great tool for knowing how to dress for your body type (no matter what size you are), which seems to confound people. It’s really helped me understand what looks good on me and what I should steer clear of while shopping. This is actually my second copy, I misplaced my original one and found it so helpful I ordered it again. Definitely worth checking out.

This book really is a must read for those unfamiliar silhouettes / fames and pairing that to fashion! Really, and femme young girl should get a copy of this little book. Using those concepts, I've power-shopped in a hour, leaving with 3 tops and 4 skirts that fit perfectly, were priced well, and always get compliments especially from other women and gay men (your truest critics ladies, adore them so!). Before reading the book, I went on intuition and took piles to the dressing room (at least I did that right) while leaving with 1 - 2 pieces at best.But, as a stylist she does so adore higher end lines that are infeasible for most income brackets. Really, even if it is a Go-To staple piece, how many people can really afford to pay Prada prices as opposed to say paying down debt or other pragmatic concerns. The author does offer alternative brands and explains the correlation of those to the higher end fashion houses / lines but I still felt woefully inadequate in my pocket book even making 6 figures. I'm hoping to start "Style on a Shoestring today" to get a bit of balance for those of us that may only ever look in dizzy bliss as Louboutin's or buy a months worth of kale over a $100 basic.

The book is certainly okay for a true novice. By true novice, I'm referring to someone with very little hunting experience.In reality, this book boils down to multiple gear lists and general tips. Most hunters, who have had unsuccessful hunts, can come up with much of the same advise: go where the other hunters are not. The author's main premise is such advise. Consequently, the gear lists also focus on the necessity of reaching less crowded public hunting grounds: light weight back packing.I would recommend this book if you are thinking about getting into hunting or have hunted a little in the past but want to commit more time to it. The book serves it's purpose as a decent starting spot. The book, however, misses opportunities to engage the reader with more information about Elk, i.e.: migratory patterns, biology, mating, herd dynamics, etc.

I picked this book up as I was getting prepared to move to Colorado. I knew nothing about elk other than seeing them a few times throughout my summer trip through the national parks system long ago when I graduated high school.The book is plainly written for the average Joe who wants to go out west and hunt for elk. Matt is a Colorado native who has local knowledge, and that was what I was hoping to glean from the book. It covers most of the bases with packing lists and making sure to hammer on things that are important such as land access and corner crossing as well as fitness involved in hunting the mountains looking for these giant cervids. It's 179 pages of easy reading, especially if you're driven by the need to succeed in the elk timber you should be able to read it in three decently relaxed sessions.The book is packed with good resources although the color photos turned out a little grainy in the paperback edition as they were converted to black and white. While the book is written well and sectioned off into easily digestable chunks perhaps it could use a second edition at some point to fix some spelling and grammar errors that to me were glaring, but that'd kind of not the point of the book, now is it? I'd have liked more information on elk behavior and being able to locate the critters -- but Matt's information on using GPS chips for land ownership and some of the information that they provide more than makes up for this, as it's the tactic I often employ with whitetail back east. He makes multiple mentions of the use of a fourwheeler and Argo type vehicle but also mentions that the land is public. This is a somewhat dangerous assertion without clarifying what type of land he's on, whether it's national forest of BLM land. There's no mention that perhaps some different tracts of public land are more accessible than others. While it may be pedantic but the use of the word 'wilderness' in the book is definitely little 'w' wilderness as the lands covered under the Wilderness Act generally speaking do not allow for mechanical conveyances. This is important for the perhaps less fit audience that may take his advice going into the woods. Fines are steep for getting caught where you're not supposed to be on the back of a quad.I have no doubt that you can be successful if you're a transitioning hunter by reading this book if you already have enough wilderness skills and you're plenty familiar with backcountry camping. Unfortunately the book left me feeling a little wanting. It's an excellent base, but after having chased whitetail for nearly two decades back east as a long range day packer, I'd have liked some more advanced tactics and elk patterning techniques. I definitely didn't want his Colorado specific honey holes, but some more general things about where elk like to hang out would have been nice.

This book is for the beginner to novice hunter with emphasis on the Colorado wilderness but the info works in any state. Most of the book covers the very basics with the last 25% actually getting into calls and tactics. This book is perfect for someone who doesn't know where to start.

I really liked reading this and have gone back several times to it.We hunt deep in a wilderness area where it's 15 miles driving from the main road to the trailhead, and another 4-5 miles of hiking to where we setup. This guide reinforces that by suggesting bivouac hunting as a solid tactic.It's also full of gear lists, which are a good starting point for customizing your own.There are tips on where to hunt, what to looks for, when to be out, etc.Highly recommended for starting elk hunters.

The author is predominantly a bow hunter. Most of his tactics and advice work for the bow hunting seasons, but may not be as effective during late season rifle seasons. However even with that said this is a great book for any beginner. This will be my second season up and I plan on implementing a bunch of his tactics. It was also helpful for me to analyze my first season and understand the items I did right, the items I could do better and the items I did completely wrong! I have more confidence in my next season and will be keeping this book with me to help me plan in the field.

there's an awful lot in this book about things like rifle cartridges and other things that decently educated hunters will probably know plenty about. I enjoyed reading the book, and it helped get me excited for my elk trip – but I didn't learn very much about elk. I did however considered a worthwhile read – especially for the price. The book does a good job of helping you understand what it takes to do well hunting on public land – which is what it is for.

When you're doing research on something like this. I find that reading multiple books that have different opinions and ideas a great way to corral unbiased information. This book has been a great addition to my elk hunting collection. A lot of great information and I like the authors point of view. Great learning tool.

Great info about basics. I'm new to elk hunting and this helped me decide on a gear list and how to approach bivy type hunting for the first time. Overall it's a good read.

Like most books of this type--essentially "inspirational" quotes and explications of the same--there's going to be hits and misses. How much this book appeals will depend on how often you connect to the chosen quotes. (I, for one, was never much of a video game player so reference to Final Fantasy and the like mean nothing to me.) Fortunately, there's enough of a cross-section of popular movies, books, TV, comic books, science/computer nerdspeak, and stand-up comedy that the more obscure references go down much easier.Of course, those more obscure references are probably some measure of how much of a geek a reader actually is. I was not too surprised that I recognized that vast majority of the quotes here. I was more surprised at how often I was pleased to find quotes I knew really well, even some obscure ones. You expect quotes from Orwell, Dune, LOTR, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, etc., but Meg Murry's quote from A Wrinkle in Time ("Like and equal are not the same thing at all.") has been rattling around in my brain ever since I read the book in grade school and I was especially pleased to find it here. It was also nice for someone who's been cheerleading for Doctor Who for 30+ years to find him quoted a few times, along with a brief analysis on why his popularity is finally surging.Ultimately this is a fun little volume whether you read it straight through or dip into it from time to time. There's plenty of "geek wisdom" in the quotes themselves as well as the brief paragraphs that accompany them. And don't forget to check out the footnotes, which are often the best part of each entry. Perfect for the geek in all of us.

This is a collection of "aphorisms" from iconic parts of nerd culture (Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.) with some "wise" explanation added by the editor to help make some kind of cohesive nerd philosophy. I bought it for a discussion on American geek culture, and I found that while it was a pleasant and funny diversion, it isn't really a collection of particularly substantive insight.It's a fun read, and you'll enjoy it, but I don't think "wisdom" really fits the book here. This is more of an opportunity to laugh and maybe see a new angle on some old favorite movie moments. I wasn't too crazy about it, but it killed some time and you might enjoy it.

Considering what it means to grow up as a nerd, this book rings true in every word and piece of knowledge it brings. It conveys messages that non-geeks might pass off as another meme to be repeated ad-nauseum and reveals the hidden means behind it, sometimes revealing a way of looking at the words that you didn't think of before.And probably best of all, the book has absolutely none of the prejudices that one might expect. It talks about what it means to be a geek girl with stunning accuracy, has a range of quotes from all different types of geekdom, and tells us that no matter who we are, geek or jock, we all face the same issues and problems and deal with them in similar ways.As it is the messages might not strike a chord with everyone who reads it, but for the ones it does reach it reaches with clarity. It's something that people should read just to see what it is they take away from it.

If you ever get confused at all your friends "inside jokes/movie/TV/character references" then this is the book for you. Also if you are the friend confusing everyone else this book will make you laugh out loud to yourself. I highly recommend it for light reading and entertainment on a cloudy day. Or just before any kind of "Nerd" party :)

Bought this for my brother who is autistic. He loves it! It's full of movie quotes and pop culture references that are just fantastic! A lot of it is just an explanation for a lot of the quotes I hear around conventions and online. Really, if you have a fan of TV tropes, this is a fantastic gift for them! As well as trivia lovers.

Gave as a holiday gift. The book is great for anyone who is a true lover of movies and books from the genre. Had enteries for any you could think of!

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some serious time was spent on parts of it, and some of the maxim/chapters make truly excellent points. And there are some really useful or meaningful ideas. BUT THEN their are other chapters. There are several incorrectly attributed quotes. Several inaccuracies. And lots of personal opinions on how to interpret each chosen meme or quotation. While everyone is welcome to interpret things as their paradigm suggests, remember the claw, a real geek will remember that a bit of research is helpful. As someone who inhales science fiction and writes professionally; and who is also married into a family that knew Carl Sagan (babysat his kids) and Rod Serling (were his neighbors) personally, I can note at least two major errors in this book. Serling definitely was not the reason The Twilight Zone was so seminal for example...unless you want to credit him with herding cats like Harry Harrison, Damon Knight, Richard Matheson, and Harlan Ellison (spelling?), of course. And Sagan was far more immensely human than implied. Other items seem to be randomly chosen as filler and lack logic much less profundity. So giving this three stars here. Feel free to read this for the good bits but maybe do a bit of research on your own.

Geek Wisdom is a super neat book filled with all kinds of "nerdy" information. The information ranges from movies to TV shows to Video Games and even toys and memorabilia. Awesome grab for any nerd.

I bought three different animal encyclopedias for our homschool classroom since we are doing Zoology this year. I do like that this book is mainly photographs, instead of drawings. I did not like that it was soft back...I don't think it will hold up well. And I do not like that it doesn't include the scientic/Latin names of the animals. My favorite of the three is "Animals: A Visual Encyclopedia" by DK (it has beautiful, crisp photos, a logical lay-out with colored tabs dividing the different animal groups and it has the scientic name for each animal).

I purchased DK's Encyclopedia of Animals along with a few other books for an upcoming zoology study my kids will be doing in the near future. When received, I immediately flipped through the pages... and WOW! The pictures are amazing and what I would expect from a DK book! This encyclopedia is very informative and engaging not to mention HUGE. My son decided to look through it and was so excited by all the facts he didn't know about his favorite animals. My only regret is not purchasing this one in hardback because I know it will be used often (although the softcover seems very durable)! This book is a fantastic addition to my family's homeschool library.

This book is aimed towards children but I love reading it to my baby, she loves the photos and I actually learn new stuff! She identified her stuffed toy, Randy, as a “King penguin” thanks to this book! Will be helpful as she gets older too because it explains species, genus, etc.

Good encyclopedia overall. Obviously it won’t include every animal, but my daughter was disappointed flamingos didn’t merit a mention. Also, snakes are venomous and not poisonous like this book says....something my 9 years old caught that I’m surprised the editors missed.We bought this to use for our homeschool biology study. Would buy again.

Good pics, Good info. 6 1/2 yr old initiating reading with it. We also purchased the First Encyclopedia of Animals - which he reads independently, but he loves all the information in the bigger book, even though he needs help with a lot of words! He will not be outgrowing this book for a long time. Lots of "I wonder" opportunities. Good for when you have 15-30 min before the next part of your day. I have already purchased 2 more for gifts - which inspired spontaneous "oh, cool" comments! Cover with contact paper because it will be well read.

This book is fantastic, great quality. We've tried to order other books on topics like space or the human body, and none of them have this wonderful layout, photos, or explanations. We bought a second copy to donate to our son's Montessori classroom and the children loved it so much that the teacher designated it as one of the "jobs" for the cultural life curriculum. We usually read 2 pages at a time, and we often re-read pages on animals he loves. We've had it for two years, and it's still his favorite book.

I purchased this book for my sons 4th birthday because he loves animals. This book was such a hit that he preferred to look at the book over playing with his new toys and Grandma and Grandpa loved it too. My 6 year old daughter has been found going through the pages and reading about her favorite animals. The pictures are great and include interesting tidbits about each animal. I had purchased my copy at Barnes and Noble for $20 but saw that it was on Amazon for only $14 so I ordered another. I figure that this would be a good Xmas gift or a perfect birthday gift to have on hand. You will not be disappointed and neither will your child!

I truly cannot recommend this book enough!! For the animal lovers out there (both young and old!), I highly recommend this encyclopedia. The pictures are vibrant and beautiful, the information provided on the animals are amazing. I am a homeschool parent and have also learned new things from reading this with my daughter!I purchased the paperback book and have no complaints about it. I would have preferred the hardcover but decided to give the paperback a try due to the price difference. I would do it again! Don't hesitate to purchase the paperback. No regrets!

This book is chock full of detailed information on the treatment of Adult Acne. I was impressed with the extent of the research that went into this book. The author left nothing to chance, she covers all possible scenarios that could occur with adult acne, even a bit of anatomy was covered in the structure and layers of the skin.This is a great book in and of itself, but what I liked most was that several alternatives were given, from your typical drugs to natural remedies. Even the foods to include in your diet in the fight against adult acne were discussed. Highly recommend!

This is an incredibly comprehensive overview of how to deal with adult acne which, make no mistake, is often different than the acne one experiences as a teenager. Yes, they can both be driven by hormones and hormonal fluctuations, but there are differences, and that means you need to treat them differently.This book covers pretty much every facet of cause (hormones, stress, etc.) and treatment, including internal (diet, medications that you take) and external (how you treat your skin, topical treatments, etc.).I was especially pleased by the author's treatment of diet, because there are so many ways that diet plays a role in how our skin looks and feels, and that includes how it impacts acne.Even though I consider myself very well-versed and well-educated when it comes to diet, and also dealing with adult acne, I still found not only reminders, but things mentioned in the book that would never even have crossed my mind in my everyday life. For example, having found myself single following a period when I wasn't, I was not changing my pillow cases as often as I otherwise would. When I was looking at my face and wondering why most of my (admittedly minor, but still a big deal to me) acne was all on just one side of my face, it suddenly hit me: that's the side of my face that is in contact with my pillow for 6 or more hours a night! I ran out and bought a few more pillow cases, and have started changing them more frequently, and whaddaya know! My acne on that side is clearing up! Doh!I also want to mention this homeopathic anti-acne product that I have been using (no harsh medications for me, thank you, although she does cover them in the book, and they can be useful for people): Natrabio Acne Relief TabletsI will say that I found a couple of typos/omitted words in the ebook, however I am not deducting any stars for them (even though I ordinarily would) for two reasons: 1. The book is so darned thorough, and readable, and 2. The author kindly sent me the book as a PDF so that I could easily read and review it, and I know that sometimes when translating a text to PDF things can happen. So, I feel that mentioning it here is sufficient. :-)In full disclosure, Kyla sent me this to review, however I am not bashful about giving my true opinion of a product (hey, I'm a lawyer, just try to *stop* me from giving my opinion! :~) )

My teenage son has severe cystic acne and I have spent hours upon hours researching every possible treatment plan from prescription medications to home remedies and even old wives tales. If you're on that same path, desperately searching for answers, this book is a great place to start. Kyla has compiled all the relevant research available based on her own personal experience battling acne and the scars it leaves behind - physically and emotionally - and put it all together into a compact, easy-to-read format that will make you a near expert overnight. What she has in this book is based on real science, including her own interviews with the best acne experts she could find. Read the book before you talk with your own doctor and you'll be able to have the kind of serious, informed, life-altering discussions you need to have rather than just trying one thing after another with no success. This book deserves more than two thumbs up - it's a guide book that shows you the way out of the severe cystic acne tunnel.

This is an excellent resource for dealing with adult acne. It is obvious the author has done her research on the hormonal, bacterial, stress and dietary causes of acne that affect adults. She has also provided a range of treatment options from diet changes (including recipes in the back!), OTC treatments, product ingredients to avoid and dermatological options. My only piece of advice (and it's a bit of a picky one) is to have a works cited page. There is an extensive list of resources, but it would be nice to have footnotes when a specific work is cited (especially if a direct quote is being used). In the style of the previous Cross-Sections titles, each oversized spread shows a cutaway view of an area of a quintessential castle and is organized around a central theme (e.g., "Building the Castle," "Livestock and Produce," "Weapons and Punishment"). Biesty brings a jeweler's eye to his seemingly infinitely detailed illustrations, while Platt supplies punchy bite-sized text blocks to highlight information about the edifice itself as well as those who lived within its walls. They introduce the ale connor, who would test the purity of the beer by pouring a bit onto a bench and then sitting on it; low-quality beer would be sugary and would glue the connor's leather breeches to the bench. Hunting dogs, Platt states, lived in heated kennels and ate specially baked bread; hot water was such a luxury that even a 13th-century English king bathed no more than once every three weeks. Easy frames of reference (a suit of armor "cost about the same as a car costs today") help the reader assimilate these disparate facts, and Biesty and Platt are sure to please the younger members of their audience with their candor about such subjects as latrines and methods of torture. Grade 4 Up-Another browsing item extraordinaire from the creators of Man-of-War (Dorling Kindersley, 1993), with huge paintings featuring hundreds of tiny figures scurrying purposefully about a 14th-Century castle's shalls and walls, all surrounded by captions and an array of random facts. Biesty creates a composite fortress, based on Chinon in France and England's Chepstow; he slices the building into 10 sections, and illustrates a particular topic-"Building the Castle," "Trades and Skills," "Weapons and Punishment," etc.-in each. The purpose here is less to inform than to entertain; sharp-eyed Waldo fans are invited to track down a spy who sneaks in at the beginning, but if that's too tame, they'll also find diminuitive scenes of torture and bloodshed, latrines in use, hapless "gong farmers" shoveling excrement, people unclothed or being doctored, weapons practice, petty crime, and general horseplay. Platt's text follows in the same vein, supplementing generalities about medieval work, life, and social structures with examples chosen for their gross-out value. Most collections will already own more reliable, detailed depictions of castle life, but not on so grand a scale. My sister is taking her 7 year old grandson to Europe...Adults often determine trips to fit their personal interests and can end up with a miserable, exhausted child. He received the book and was full of excited chatter about all the things in the book. He has a stutter, but I am pretty sure he said something about where people went to the bathroom in castles - LOL OK LOL Now, when they visit a castle he will already have an understanding of what went on inside. My sister said there were parts that were graphic about how they treated prisoners (mistreated)...he was ok with it, she wanted to move on to something else...but that's the point. There was plenty for all - adults evidently learned a great deal and he loved it. I was SO pleased to hear his little high voice chattering excitedly about it...he often just says a single word and hopes to get off the phone. He doesn't say things to please people...he expresses his views, warts and all...and he love this one!

Our young 11-year old cousin has an elevated reading level, so we decided to make this a gift to him to see what he thinks. It's something he can enjoy now with all the pictures but also grow with (since there is so much text, history bits, and architecture). My husband really liked the book and was tempted to keep it - ha!

The labeled pictures are great for understanding what was going on.

I bought this for my nephew. Among all the cross section books, he seemed to like this the most. I kind of liked it the most too. There's something fun about looking inside an old castle. It not only shows sections, but it covers how a castle functioned. If you're deciding which cross section book to get, I'll say get this one.

Each page is packed with information about how people lived in castles. Biestey's illustrations are absurdly detailed and very clever. It's a joy to read for pleasure, even as an adult. One word of warning though; there are a few fairly gory scenes, so some people may feel it's not appropriate for children. To be fair, punishment could be extremely brutal in those times, and a half-page isn't much when only describes some of the barbaric acts committed in the name of medieval justice.This is probably one of my favorite books, and I intend to read it a few more times before consigning it to the coffee table. The only thing that really upset me about this book was that it eventually ended.

This book is a great learning tool for kids who love castles and history. We are fortunate to have had the chance to take the children to Germany and this book helped them better understand the bergs, schlosses and ruins we visited. They now know they would not want to live in a castle.

Great even for young children.

good detailed book. easy reading, yet very informative. Perfect for my gradeschool niece.
