There are some valuable tips here, but the book is really more of an exercise book. In order to get the most out of it, it isn't really something to read as much as something to work your way into. There are a lot of good storytelling books out there, but this is really more of an exercise book. Good for that purpose; less good as a straight read-through. I didn't do all the exercises, but I did a number of them, and they worked out well. So, if you get this book, the best way to appreciate it is to take your time and work through it rather than read it like a regular business book.

This is a simple to follow book on how to tell effective stories.Because I am a writer and public speaker I learned long ago that the Best Story Does Win!I found this book informative and helpful. It's organized to help you develop your own storytelling mastery for different situations. When you learn these methods you'll be able to grabpeoples attention, draw them in and take them on a wild exciting roller coaster ride ofemotions...up...down...and all around, stopping them on the memorable point you want them to get!Very nice! I enjoyed it a lot!
I've used my own stories for years in making a point. Many times I get so enmeshed with "my story" that I forget the reason I'm telling it. I've been buying books that aid or reinforce my method and this was one that brought me around to looking at how I present and how to better craft my message.For me there were no "Aha!" moments but for someone attempting to weave an experience into a presentation this will definitely assist them. Annette Simmons guides you on how to craft your personal experience into an introduction, making it believable by adding personal credibility to keep your audience interested.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is a public speaker, teacher, leader, or manager. People are strongly influenced and persuaded by stories. The most published book in the world is filled with wonderful stories that have persuaded people to achieve great things and act in great ways. Those stories were likely spread through oral tradition before being recorded into the book or collection of books that we know as the bible. I have spent many years as both a public speaker, instructor, and leader/manager. I discovered the truth of Annette Simmons' book through real world experiences. Sometimes I failed and sometimes I was successful. After reading Annette's book I realized that my success or failure often hinged on how well I used stories to make critical points. There is something about a story that draws a persons attention but a story well told commands attention. Annette does a great job explaining the why and how of this truth. For those interested in further study the University of North Texas offers a Graduate Certificate in Storytelling. The certificate can be achieved online.
I teach electronics at a Technical College. The author's suggestions for engaging my audience have been amazingly useful.Effective teaching includes the ability to toggle back and forth between objective and subjective stories.The same types of stories help us motivate ourselves and deepen our personal relationships with our friends and families. This is an awesome book!
Annette Simmons is a great storyteller and it show in both her books about storytelling. The Story Factor and this book both are good. Different approaches but both are worth the investment in time and money.The structure of the book and the small exercises at the end of each chapter gets you involved. 'Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins' shows us how to weave storytelling into a regular practice. If you have a prepared elevator speech, you too should have a repertoire of stories to help your audience relate and remember! Good read; a must for presenters.
I heard Annette Simmons speak in a webinar and bought this book because I wanted to know more about her perspectives on stories - various types of them, the purposes they serve, and how to improve mine and those of my clients.I work with a lot of groups and individuals who are trying to define who they want to be, or to get closer to the picture they have in their heads. Simmons' approach will be an excellent tool to help people be more intentional about the identity they are presenting to the world through the stories they tell. I have already tried a number of her recommended exercises, and received quite positive feedback on the stories they generated.
