This title was a bright spot in my reading lineup last month, and it can be a bright spot in yours too. Thank you to Sourcebooks and Net Galley for the DRC, which I received free in exchange for an honest review.Is this a thing that any kid in America could have done? Not so much. Carlson has a rare blend of intelligence, organization, and social skills; above and beyond all else, he possesses unstoppable determination, clear focus, and a work ethic that never flags for one tiny minute until he discovers he is close to working himself to death. Those lacking talent and determination may never reach the end of the rainbow as this author has done; that much is clear. But oh, what fun to share the ride with him!Given his family’s expectations for him, or lack thereof, it’s amazing he finished high school, and his acquisition of a college education is more remarkable still. But it is his junior year at a state college in Connecticut that plants the seed that will sprout and grow into a way of life; he is invited to spend his school year in Paris. Once he’s there, the tumblers click, and he knows that he has found his people.As Carlson’s story unspools, he debunks stereotypes believed by many Americans, and a few of them are ones I believed too until I read this memoir. Carlson delivers setting in a way much more immediate than any number of Google searches can provide, but it’s his insights regarding French culture, law, and society that make his memoir so captivating. The prose is lean and occasionally hilarious. He plucks choice, juicy vignettes from his journey all along the way, and this makes us feel as if we are riding quietly on his shoulder taking it all in as he goes.If you’ve never been to France and don’t intend to, you can still enjoy this book. If you don’t like pancakes or any aspect of the traditional American breakfast, it doesn’t matter. Carlson is enormously entertaining, and so his story stands on its own merits. I am furthermore delighted to see that the only recipe that is inserted into his narrative is actually a joke. A small collection of actual recipes is inserted at the end, and although I never, ever, ever do this, I intend to try one of them out tonight! But even if you skip the recipe section entirely, you should read this memoir. It’s too much fun to miss. The best news of all is that it’s available for purchase right now.Get it, and read it!
In some ways Carlson's account is as harrowing and painful as one might imagine being shared in a support group. A very tough childhood, no safety nets and plenty of setbacks makes the story a remarkable account of someone who just won't give up in finding their place in the world. His generally positive outlook and determination come through as genuine and commendable. As a francophile and a foodie I was intrigued by the story. Having only been to Paris perhaps a dozen times, and none longer than a month, I haven't experienced those pangs for an American breakfast. But I can see how it might well affect an ex-pat who has been away from home for a long time.The support group (writer's group), some professional editing and Carlson's own experience in screen writing helped keep the narrative crisp and engaging. There are plenty of insights into the cultural differences between France and the U.S., the myriad challenges of opening and keeping restaurants going, and most importantly distinctive people in Carlson's life. I found myself rooting for his victory and am glad there was a genuine happy ending.
This was a delightful book! Following the author's story from small town USA to France was fascinating. I laughed out loud at some of the parts. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You'll learn much along the way, and will be left scratching your head at the absurdities of the French government when trying to open, and run, a business. Certainly made me appreciate America!
Now who would think an American, who is not even a cook, could dream of an American diner in Paris -- of all places? I really enjoyed this book, and deeply sympathized with Craig when he came up against all those idiosyncratic bureaucracy and confusing labour laws of France! If I have one criticism, it is that he let on right at the start that he actually did manage to establish his diner ... It would have been more suspenseful to keep the reader guessing for a while whether he would actually succeed with his impossible dream! And I am so sorry, Craig, that I did not know about DIA #1 in 2006, when last I was in Paris! One does get a bit fed up with a croissant and coffee for breakfast! I enjoyed your story very much, and thank heavens it was edited and published by an actual publisher. Too many of these basically great memoirs are spoiled by the inexperience of their authors.
I have eaten at Breakfast in America several times and finally decided to read the book. It's very funny and charming but I had to stop several times to recover from all of the awful things the French bureaucrats put him through, including being thrown in jail. How he made it, I don't know. I think having his French partner join him and straighten out everything was the key. I have seen even French people have horrible things happen to them when a employee, or an ex one, sue for money. They seem to have all the rights and it is ridiculous how the judges side with them. Don't even get me started on how judges handle divorces in France. I recommend this book for those who think living in Paris is a dream. France is wonderful but building a dream here isn't always so.
This was a very interesting read, not the usual take on moving to Paris and living your dream. The problems that Craig ran into trying to set up his restaurant - and then the ongoing bureaucratic hassle and the labor problems once he was established and operating - were almost unbelievable. One would have to be totally fixed on the goal to endure some of the things he ran into. But dedicated he was, and he triumphed in the end over things that would have defeated a lesser guy. He deserves all his business success and personal happiness.
What a fun read. I love true stories. Beside the fact that my daughter is written about (in a nice way) in the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. And what a ride it is!!! Craig deserves a gold medal for what my dad used to call "stick-to-it-iveness"...nothing stops him from making his dream come true! Bravo, Craig Carlson. You hit this one out of the park!!
