I remember when Fiona's Luck first came out. One of my fellow librarians and I literally squealed with delight when we saw it. We said, "St. Patrick's Day. Reader's Theatre." And that is exactly what we did. Once a month, she and I did Reader's Theatre with library books at a local bookstore. This was one of the featured books.Fiona's Luck is a delightful story with a clever twist. I didn't know how Fiona would resolve her problem until she actually resolved it. Not many people can match wits with a Leprechaun King, but Fiona manages admirably.As wonderful as the story is, the reason we two librarians squealed with delight was the charming artwork. Kelly Murphy (good Irish name!) creates an Ireland that is both realistic and enchanting. Even in the heartbreaking barrenness of the first few pages, magic lurks in the corners. Her use of color and lighting effects for setting mood is masterful.

I was on a mission, as a teacher, to find a book for St. Patrick's Day, that had a moral to the story, and was public school appropriate. This was perfect! I realized that there aren't too many of its kind. I needed a book for 1st grade, that I could use for a writing activity (I am lucky because ... ). I know that I will have this book in my library for years to come! I am very pleased with my purchase.

This book has been a year-round favorite with our now 5 year old for at least two years. We enjoy that the main character is a very clever role model for our daughter. Both the writing and the illustrations are a lot of fun.

A wonderful and charming book that won the heart of a child that I read to, so much so that I ordered this copy as a Christmas gift for her. The main character has spunk and intelligence, outwitting the king of the fair folk as he tests her honesty.

I bought this for my three young granddaughters for St. Patrick’s Day. They loved the story, as did I, and we read it over and over again during my visit with them.

Great folk tale about the luck of Ireland, how to leprechauns came to have it, and how one girl got it back.

I read this book to my daughter's 2nd Grade class for Multicultural Week. Since our ancestry is from Ireland, we chose this book. The kids really enjoyed it! The drawings are beautiful, a real joy to look at.

Unpacking Queer Politics argues that the strong lesbian feminist movement of the 1970s, which was able to articulate a philosophy and practice that distinguished lesbian politics from gay male politics, was submerged in the 1990s beneath a gay male agenda called queer politics. The new politics repudiated lesbian feminist ideas and celebrated ‘manhood’ as a goal for gay men. Practices which construct this ‘manhood’, such as sadomasochism, cutting and piercing, female-to-male transsexual surgery, and which are promoted in queer politics, need to be understood as forms of self-harm which result from the oppression of lesbians and gay men. The political agenda of queer politics is damaging to the interests of lesbians, women in general, and to marginalized and vulnerable constituencies of gay men. The book concludes by arguing that precisely the commitment to equality in relationships and sex that has been so important to lesbian feminists, and so excoriated in much of queer theory, should form the basis of a social transformation. In this way lesbians should be seen as the vanguard of social change.

I used this book when preparing my senior project research on the subject of transsexualism and the feminist movement. At the time, it was one of the few sources on the topic I could find. Not only did it cover the topic of transsexuals, but it also covered a myriad of other topics, including the misogyny and lesbophobia contained in queer politics. The research in the area of meaningful critiques of queer politics is certainly lacking, so it is refreshing to see it here from a lesbian feminist perspective. This is fascinating from cover to cover and I recommend this book to anybody studying gender, queer theory, and LGBT activists.

A brilliant feminist dismantling of the sexism in so-called "queer" politics.

Jeffreys' polemical approach eclipses some of her more valid points about the failings of queer politics. True, queer politics and theory have often been dominated by white male perspectives. True, lesbian specificity ought to be a consideration in gender and sexuality studies.That said, if I could have given this book a lower rating I would have.Why, you ask? "Unpacking Queer Politics" is, at root, an amateurish yet vicious attack on transexuality (particularly FTM trans people), S/M, and various other practices and people which Ms Jeffreys deems to be in opposition to her lesbian-feminist project. This project seems to be devoted to reinstating some idea of a natural female body, a pure sexuality, and a deeply identity-based politics.Frankly, reading even a few pages of this book made me sick to my stomach. After having read the whole thing, however, I curled up into a ball and cried. The brute disgust and hateful rhetoric which Jeffreys deploys against trans people is illogical at best. This book has the dubious honor of being the worst I've read in recent memory.

Some books change the way you see the world and the way you want the future to be. Unpacking Queer Politics is such a book.For two decades, Queer has dominated Western ideas about lesbian and gay life. It has also affected heterosexual relations because many leading figures Queer politics are heterosexual and bisexual. It has directed women towards an appreciation of any kind of sex, in the name of liberating us from restrictions on our right to choose sexuality. And yet as the new century approached, I began to hear whispers of discontent among women; that this sexual freedom we all wanted had not quite arrived in the way we had dreamed it would. Queer politics had become a kind of commercial playground dominated by gay male and heterosexual money and interests. The only lesbians on the Queer scene seemed to be sadomasochists, masculine worshippers, or butch-femme revivalists. But as Sheila Jeffreys reveals, we really should have seen it coming. As she charts us through the 1970s and into the beginnings of Queer, it's suddenly clear that it couldn't have turned out any other way. But this book may just be powerful enough to change the course of women's sexual future away from Queer and towards a far more exciting shore.Jeffreys goes where most of us fear to tread. She travels through the backrooms of sex bars, into the studios of gay porn, onto the agendas of sadomasochists, and into the rooms where lesbian women and gay men women are now cutting, beating and branding themselves and each other in the name of Queer liberation. She never departs from her love of women and her commitment to our freedom. Yet she does something quite unexpected in these pages; she reaches out to gay men as well as lesbians by recognising that Queer capitalises on our dual alienation from the heterosexist world. It is this form of sex capitalism that she claims must be challenged and overthrown if we are to move once more towards creating a world in which women can become truly liberated.It is through the recognition of Queer politics as strongly heterosexist and therefore conservative that Jeffreys is able to offer us insight into why it has become so successful. Her research is thorough and because of this, she is able to create a convincing case for the argument that Queer promotes practices which violate the most basic human rights of women and men. It is a retrograde and homophobic politics, she argues, particularly in its support for the genital mutilation of allegedly 'masculine' women and 'feminine' men in transgender surgery. This, Jeffreys claims, is a gross violation of human rights and should be challenged as such. But as Chapter 6 reveals, some governments are now offering money for allegedly incorrect women and men to be 'corrected' under the knife. Jeffreys asks quite simply, 'why don't we do away with gender altogether?' I asked myself shortly afterwards 'how could I have studied gender and feminism for a decade and never come across that question?'But this is the beauty of Unpacking Queer Politics; it is simple in the way that you only find in the work of a writer who understands the whole environment in which their subject has developed - in this case, the evolution of Queer from an idea into a dominant politics and practice.This is a serious and very readable book. Even if you don't agree with the author's politics, this is a history of Queer that should be on the shelves of all those interested in human rights, sexual relations, human behaviour, feminism, sexual subcultures, legal approaches to lesbian or gay and transgender rights, revolutionary politics, pornography, legal concepts of privacy rights, political science, and social change.The late anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko said (and I paraphrase from memory), 'the greatest weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed'. I believe that Unpacking Queer Politics may just succeed in disarming Queer. It may lift from women's minds the shackles laid down by a sexual liberation movement gone terribly male. And maybe for us twenty somethings, some of the optimism of the last chapter will give us the belief that we can go up against sexual exploitation, and we can win.

This is a book that had to be written. It is intellectually first-rate, courageous and powerful. I applaud the author's gutsy and flawless analysis of the "sex as abuse as subversion as fun" farce that is now, sadly, the norm in so much lesbian and gay writing. By saying what has to be said, Jeffreys gives all those silenced by the ignorance of those who "have fun" at the expense of others a voice with which to say no. A must read for anyone who cares about justice and equality.

As a crusty old, bisexual liberal I raise a toast every year to celebrate Reagan's death and when this woman departs the earth I will do the same...for exactly the same reasons. I don't especially like hateful, bigoted, conservative people who are a menace to individual freedom.Even for her this is a trans/homo/bi-phobic, simplistic, asexual, joy-killing tome and that is saying something. She's like Cotton Mather with an extra X chromosome.P.S. It's really not OK for any feminist old enough to remember gay and bisexual men dying in the plague of the early AIDS epidemic (including pioneers for the rights of all LGBT people like Stephen Donaldson) to be homophobic.

Extremely transphobic, calls trans women "males" and trans men "females," recycles the same transphobic arguments used since the 1970s against trans people.

Jeff is my pastor, so I'm a little bit biased. Still, we chose this study for our first in a new group, and I'm glad we did. It sets up clear parameters for getting started with a healthy, God-centered small group (creating a mission statement, goals, and covenant). Six chapters make for a brief but thought-provoking and informative group experience.

Haven't had a chance to read but I am very excited at what this book has to offer.

Jeff does a wonderful job in listing the rights and wrongs in starting a small group ministry. I have used this book as a guide to both adult and youth ministry. What a great way to start your creative insights to the world of small group ministry

About the Author

Amby Burfoot won the Boston Marathon in 1968 and joined Runner's World ten years later. He became executive editor in 1985, and he held the position for twenty years before retiring in 2013. Amby has run 110,000 miles in his lifetime and owns the US's longest active "race road streak," having completed the Thanksgiving Day 5-mile run in Manchester, Connecticut, fifty-five years in a row. Currently a writer at-large for Runner's World, he has been honored by numerous running organizations both as an athlete and as a writer. Now in his early 70s, he continues running up to thirty miles a week.

Really enjoyed reading this book. As an avid runner in her late 50s, I enjoyed the encouragement throughout the book for those of us that still strive for our best but can't run like a 20-something any longer. He very well stated my own personal philosophy about running and that is that "every mile is a gift." At 57, I am fitter than I have ever been in my life. I still strive to challenge myself in my races, but don't beat myself up if I don't make my goal. Life's too short for that and it takes the joy out of the activity. It's an activity that's good for the mind, soul and body. Thanks Amby for the gift of this book to runners of all ages and abilities.

This is a book filled with simple and practical running advice that is never preachy. There is no, “buy this,” or “use that” to reach Nirvana on the road or track.Page after page, I got the feeling Amby just wants others to enjoy both a lifestyle and a lifeTIME of running.Wise advice about how to run farther, faster, and safer is found in every well organized chapter. In areas where the author is not an expert, he happily trots out a personal friend who is.The biggest and best point of this conversationally written gem is this: accept your fitness limitations as you age, make adjustments, and keep enjoying the journey.Amby admits, in his early 70’s he’s now twice as slow as he was in his prime. Yet, he happily keeps going—seemingly without shame or regret. As a guy who started running at 48, this is an inspiration.A must read for masters runners like me, but a word to the wise for anyone who wants running to be a journey and not just a destination.

Amby Burfoot writes about lifetime running to regular people. I gave it five stars, because it is so well written and captures so well the spirit of the love of running that anyone can share. Running isn't complicated, but there is so much depth that a runner can immerse himself/herself in healthy practices that keep a person running for decades and enjoying health benefits from staying fit in old age. I have read plenty of books on running, because I love to read as well. Those books were good. This is the best I've read yet. Read the book!

Oh, my goodness, great read! So awesome that he'll be running Boston tomorrow (50th anniversary of his 1968 win). There's no Boston in my future; but, I'll be running. And, I'll be cheering for him and all runners tomorrow.

An inspiring book for "seasoned" runners, runners who've returned to the sport after a few-plus years of not running, and for newer runners as well. Well-written and very relatable to all those who love to run!

I started running at 55. I made many mistakes and persevered through injuries. I'm still running at 63, and I found out I've done a lot of things wrong, most importantly running too fast. After reading this, I slowed down. As the doctor says, I often finish my runs feeling like I could turn around and it again. I'm pretty confident I will be running many more years, and it will be because I stumbled across this book (pardon the pun).

This is an excellent read for anyone who has been running for a lifetime, wants to run for a lifetime, or anyone like myself who recently began running later in life (five months ago at age 68). There is a considerable quantity of practical advice for the physical and the phychological aspects of running. Mr. Burfoot also presents information concerning various studies that support the long term health benefits of long term running.

This book is pertinent for all runner and was easy to read. Good advice from one of the running legends.
