Combining chemistry with evolution might seem like a long, tedious exercise; it is anything but in this book. The authors do a masterful job of invigorating both topics. Their view of chemistry's structure of the Periodic Table for the appearance of life comes close to an Anthropic Principle for chemistry. The unique features of many elements besides carbon are shown to be critical to the origin of biological structures. "Again and again, we have to consider if these uses of elements in various mechanisms and pathways were the only possible ways for the system we call life to evolve, given environmental availability. The matching of function with the known chemical potentialities of the elements is extremely suggestive that there was but one effective way." (P. 173) Their treatment particularly of the metal elements and their importance alongside the organic elements, the usual suspects, is particularly instructive and eye-opening.But it is their view of evolution that is more compelling. The key is their concept of chemotype, analogous to genotype, but which captures biological development by chemical composition and energy usage and organization in ways that are common to many species. As an example, a large chemotype is all of the anaerobic bacteria or about the first billion years of evolution because they essentially used a similar chemistry or at least used the same set of elements. Similarly all of the multicellular animals are a chemotype because the palette of elements used, the energy uptake, and the organization form a distinct chemical category. Usually, chemistry is considered the underpinnings of biological organisms; in their formulation organisms and species are what compose chemotypes. Major chemotypes such as anaerobes, aerobic bacteria, eukaryotes, multicellular eukaryotes, etc. form sequences that find chemical-energy-organization solutions for particular environments or environmental eras and that come to depend on each other chemically so that they fit inside each other like Russian dolls (see cover drawing). Another advantage of their approach is that they are able to distinguish humans as a new chemotype even as they show the continuity of human activity with the progressive changes between earlier chemotypes. This picture of our uniqueness within continuity at least comes closer to the observed wild differences between us and great apes than does the conventional genetic picture.The book is readable and informative throughout even if beyond my background. They list in the credits two other earlier books on similar topics by themselves that show a long collaboration, and this book feels like a condensed, summary statement even at 450 pages. On the one hand I was surprised how engrossed they had me with things like the availability of molybdenum during evolution's oxidation phases or in what it could do in enzymes for particular reactions for particular organisms. On the other hand it was so refreshing to see science writers pushing beyond the particulars to grapple with the big picture. In their view evolution is unabashedly progressive.The authors are very aware that their view of evolution has let a genie out of the bottle of conventional Darwinism. In their words: "... much of evolution can be followed through gene sequences, but this discussion often appears as if it is an analysis of random events which dominates the selection of the `fittest' species. This leaves the impression that there is no rational explanation of the general development of life and to the limits of biological evolution towards ecological fitness. Our stance does not question that this description of the random origin of species is correct, we believe it is, but we consider that the species-embracing chemotypes and their divisions, which include very large groups of species in well-separated classes of organisms, have developed differently in an inevitable logical sequence forced by equilibrium thermodynamic environmental, and largely kinetically controlled life chemistry." (P. 307)They do a remarkable job of tying a huge array of research and ideas together into a provocative and convincing view of evolution. Very thought provoking.

This book is a delight to read, it is concise, straight to the point and its organization is impeccable. The authors start by stating why a biological evolution is inadequate and should be accompanied with the thermodynamics universal views. Settings that enable biomolecules formation is then described (biosphere). The theme of the book is that species evolution is a thermodynamics necessity to form energy efficient capturing and degradation systems, in which efficiency is rated as the system fitness. Thermodynamics biochem systems use substance in which are available to them and evolute through organization architecture engineering. The species evolution tree is then exposed by introducing to chemical changes (i.e. adding and discarding of substance usability and reactions). Until we can design such matching instruments, our upper appendages should not be understressed.

This book gives a very interesting slant on the evolutionary process. It is orginal, and powerful in its argument for a chemotype perspective on the evolutionary process complementary to gene oriented perspective that dominates evolutionary theory. I cannot help but feel that this book and other complementary works that deal with Exergy and ecological systems are the start of a shift to a more balanced perspective on evolutionary processes.The book is very densely written. If I was a chemist I would get the most out of it, but even without being a chemist there are aspects which are relatively easy to grasp, given some background in evolutionary theory.An exceptional, original and intellectual book, that gives food for thought even if you understand only 40% of it!

Dustin Stevens is one of my most favorite authors. His writing superb with story lines as varied as one could imagine. He always seems to keep you in the dark while plying his craft so very skillfully. Motive is such an example of said writing. I seem to always attempt to "solve" the mystery after just a few chapters, all to my own "peril". Dustin achieved what he always does-sometime during the story he writes something that makes me say, "I did not see that coming!" Set in a state I will probably never see, Dustin sounds a yarn of deception, intrigue, falsehoods aplenty and not any small amount of thrills and action. As usual, I recommend this book to those who love a mystery with twists and turns abounding. Happy reading!

I’m a huge fan of the Hawaii 5-0 series with Alex O’Loughlin, which is what initially drew me to the book. This novel is its own thing, a straight shooting political action thriller slash detective story without the humorous asides and banter of Hawaii 5-0. But asides from that, I imagine fans of the TV franchise should accommodate to this writer quite well.I won’t recap the plot, as the blurb does an excellent job of that. What I will say is there are additional subtleties and dimensions to the storytelling, including various points of intrigue that a blurb cannot do justice to. I found the writing very professional and entirely in keeping with this genre. The pacing was excellent. I also enjoyed the dynamic between the lady detective and the chief of police; both characters were easy to empathize and identify with, and were believably drawn.The author also ably sidestepped what for me is the number one drawback of this genre, one-dimensional bad guys, that by being all bad, don’t seem real; they just lack the nuances, complexities, and contradictions of real people. In Motive, by contrast, they’re quite fascinating and entertaining in their own rights.The local Hawaiian atmosphere adds a travel-lit dimension for folks who enjoy exotic locales. Due to the vivid descriptive writing, it’s easy to see the film play out in your head. Considering this is a very over-written and highly competitive genre, I was impressed with what the author brought to the table. He has his own distinct voice and without question I look forward to future titles from him.

This would be my least favourite read of one of Stevens' books (have read about a dozen). As an older female reader, it was the subject matter that I found harrowing along with the brutal and matter-of-fact nature of the crimes also the details of the victims. Furthermore, I was disappointed with the conclusion. For me it did not tie up all the loose ends satisfactorily.That, however, did not put me off ordering more of the author's works and having almost finished reading "Four" - I can recommend this story as one of his best.PS: Good to see the formatting of "Thriller" much tighter than in some of the earlier books.

Admittedly, I would give a lower rating if this book cost $10--or even $5. But we're talking $.99 books, here, and Stevens seems to churn them out. This is good for people like me, who need a steady diet of light but absorbing stories to help us get to sleep every night.We've got a female protagonist (always a plus with me), adequate development of sympathetic characters, a unique setting (Hawaii), and a cultural milieu populated with lots of folks who are not just white Anglos. The blood-and-guts level is high but not overwhelming.The plot is close to being out of this world, but not quite. Is it possible to suspend belief enough to relax into the world of the book, follow the twists and turns of the mystery, and care about the outcome? Yes, it is. Yes, I enjoyed it. Definitely worth the money.

Another excellent book by my favorite author Dustin Stevens! His writing style makes the words flow and the pages turn until I sadly reach the end. I experience the emotions of the characters, especially Kalani, feeling like I’m there. Emphatically recommend this book. I’m going to search my Kindle library for a Dustin Stevens book I haven’t read, or one I will re-read. Enjoy!

Average detective story that takes place in Hawaii, otherwise there isn't much else that makes this book memorable. The story is slow-moving and plods along with very little action, and the main character, Kalani, is about as interesting as watching paint dry. I get the author's reason for making her so pensive and somber (from an earlier on-the-job event), but her ultra low-key persona just doesn't make for an exciting read. I've read six other books by this author and thoroughly enjoyed them, so I kept reading hoping this one would elevate itself to match those others, but it never did. Although the last 60-70 pages made for an interesting climax, getting there was a chore. Not his best effort, IMHO.

Without repeating the entire plot, I am happy to say that this book kept me turning the page..... Some people look for books that challenge their intellect, while others simply read books that entertain. Somewhere in the middle are books that are well written, without challenging our mental capacity so we can simply enjoy a fast moving story. While I have read books that have held my attention better than Motive, it was still a satisfying experience. It was entertaining, albeit a little predictable. Overall, I am glad it filled a couple of hours of my spare time.

Another good read from Dustin Stevens. Really keeps your interest and makes it so you don't want to stop reading. Someof the story is a little gruesome but it does help emphasize what I assume many police people have to face in their jobs. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good detective novel.

Andy’s been drinking, ’cause you know, being a cop is hard, and Sookie has to call Portia (his sister) to come and pick him up.Leaving his car at the bar.For persons unknown to leave a dead body in.But why would someone want to kill Lafayette? He’s so much fun!Yeah, well, he’s also got a BIG mouth. A BIG mouth that he’s apparently been running about a house he’d been going to, “where there were all kinds of sex hi-jinks going on,” and someone didn’t like that. Someone didn’t like that a lot.So poor Sook’s stressed out about that.Then when she gets home from work that night, Bill tells her that she’s been “summoned” by Eric.Better and better.The next evening they drive to Shreveport, where Eric informs her that she’s been LOANED out to vampires in Dallas who could use some assistance of the telepathic variety. AND while Sookie’s understandably upset about Eric’s high-handedness, there’s really not much she can do about it—she did, after all, agree to help him any time he wanted, in exchange for turning over human culprits to human authorities, rather than taking matters into their vampire hands. I suppose it’s her own fault for not specifying she wouldn’t stand for being loaned out. You live and you learn, I guess.Freakin’ vampires.And that is how Bill and Sookie wind up on an airplane bound for Dallas.I’ve already said that this is probably my least favorite book in the series until you get to end, and that is b/c . . . while I don’t have a problem with kink, I do have a problem with gross, middle-aged, pervy kink. And this group is just . . . blech.I also have a problem with centuries-old, pedophile vampires. Actually, I have a problem with ALL types of pedophiles, so even contemplating one that has been doing what they do FOR SO FREAKING LONG<——well, clearly, it’s upsetting.AND all of the Bill and Sookie relationship angst from book 1 grows and flourishes in book 2 (and relationship angst is not something you want growing and flourishing). This is also the book where you get your first glimpse of how self-absorbed Bill can be.This book is also where you get your first glimpse of how attentive someone-not-Bill can be.*winks*And that’s really the only sell point for this installment. Well, that, and it’s necessary to read this one to get to the good ones. BOTTOMLINE—too much perv for one book. Read it b/c you can’t move forward without it, but go into it knowing that there is some seriously disturbing stuff going on. That is all.

Book two of the The True Blood novels by Charlaine Harris is just as good as the first book! I was having a tough time putting it down.Now that Eric the head vampire of Area 5 knows of Sookies disabilities, he plans to put them to good use, for himself of course. After a shocking incident involving the unusually drunk Officer Andy Bellefleur and the flashy Lafayette, I wont' give any spoilers here folks so that's all I can say on that matter, Sookie is whisked away to tend to vamp matters, in Texas!Of course our southern belle Sookie cannot take a step these days without finding herself in mortal peril. Before she even leaves Bon Temps a Maenad finds Sookie and leaves a not so friendly message for her to relay to Eric. She wants tribute, but it isn't always that simple now is it folks?The matters in Texas however becomes more and more problematic for our gal. A vampire has been taken from his nest, and his family wants answers, and their deaths. She has to infiltrate a fanatic religious group of sun worshipers who may or may not have kidnapped their vampire.All Sookie wants to do is go to work, she can't stop thinking about her drive way and how it needs to be re graveled and how she is going to afford it having to take so many days off from work. Damn Bill, he wants to treat Sookie as a kept woman but he isn't doing such a good job where she really needs it. I am so Eric's corner, his sweetly seductive bad boy self, and his brief moments with Sookie, I'm rooting for him.[...]

The best part of this book is more Eric! Although I like this book and this series in general, I felt this book had a lot more issues than the first. There are inconsistencies right off the bat. For example, Charlsie's husband was named Ralph in the first book, then changed to Micah in the second. The type of things you notice if you read them in succession I guess. The maenad in this book was just kind of weird and stupid. I think the show made a better plot of it to be honest. The events in the beginning of the book are almost forgotten because of all the craziness that goes on in the middle. The Sookie Stackhouse novels are almost like two books in one. There is always the same formula: Situation A. Situation B. Situation B resolved. Oh yeah, back to Situation A. In this book, Sookie finally realizes that she is way in over her head with the vampires. She is now under their control all the time, and their problems frequently disrupt her life. The background characters in this book finally come to the foreground. It accentuates how different they are on the show. Tara is very weak emotionally, but strong financially and very pretty in the book. She's an absolute train wreck on the show, but at least her personality is strong. Sam is very nice in the book and practically worships Sookie, but on the show he isn't as nice and has raging jealousy issues. I don't like Bill at all and I think he's a user, but Sookie can't see it yet, regardless of the medium. This book is good, although it is a bit scattered. Definitely worth the read.
