I almost gave this book 4 stars as, regardless of their popularity, I dislike any title with the negativity represented by such a word as "dummies."Aside from that, this is a well researched, well-written teaching book. I've been crocheting for around 45 years and learned much here.There is textbook style instruction from books to yarn to pattern reading and everything in between, humor, teaching patterns designed to familiarize the reader with crochet and pattern reading, and many charts, graphs and illustrations to help you along on your crochet journey.I got the Kindle edition and was intrigued by the way you can click on the little arrows to move a graphic out of the way when it obscures the text. As always, double clicking expands any graphic as well as showing the entire thing (little arrows notwithstanding, sometimes I like to see the whole picture, chart, etc., at once.) Then simply click the X in the upper right-hand corner to go back to the book.I'm glad I got this book, regardless of my prejudice of titles with negative connotations.
Not a great book for beginning crocheters. It is too wordy and really has no patterns to speak of. I would not suggest buying it if you are looking for a reference type book.
Bought as a gift for a daughter who is new to crochet. The instructions are very clear - a great thing since we don't live in the same city.
I am very disappointed in this book. I am a knitter but have crocheted in the past and wanted a brush up on stitches and some simple, neat patterns. This book has no neat patterns and the directions for " how to" are hard to follow. I will try Youtube or crochet lessons at my local yarn store.
Not for beginners, I was not able to learn from this book at all (would have returned it if I didn't have to pay to return it, it will just be donated now). Better off getting a beginner stitch pattern kit from the craft store. It doesn't show how to get from a single chain to any other stitches, not enough photos, if you learn best by reading, maybe this will work.
This book is a good introduction to crocheting and it is chock full of many interesting projects.The first few projects are simple enough, however the later projects are a bit more challenging, and I wish the book would have included illustrations of how to make the stitches in the trickier sections, as this would have been very helpful. I am still unable to take on many of the harder projects because of that. However, I still think this book is a worthwhile buy, but I wouldn't recommend that a beginning crocheter rely solely on this book.

The Crochet Pattern Book for Dummies, is okay , haven't used it a lot but I'm in classes to learn how to read the instructions.
I really didn't need all the technical instructions in this book. It's good for reference if you are self taught and not quite sure of your stitches. Although there are other beginner books offering more patterns along with the basics... Birdie Gee
