Biesty creates a composite fortress, based on Chinon in France and England's Chepstow; he slices the building into 10 sections, and illustrates a particular topic-"Building the Castle," "Trades and Skills," "Weapons and Punishment," etc.-in each. The purpose here is less to inform than to entertain; sharp-eyed Waldo fans are invited to track down a spy who sneaks in at the beginning, but if that's too tame, they'll also find diminuitive scenes of torture and bloodshed, latrines in use, hapless "gong farmers" shoveling excrement, people unclothed or being doctored, weapons practice, petty crime, and general horseplay. Platt's text follows in the same vein, supplementing generalities about medieval work, life, and social structures with examples chosen for their gross-out value. Most collections will already own more reliable, detailed depictions of castle life, but not on so grand a scale. My sister is taking her 7 year old grandson to Europe...Adults often determine trips to fit their personal interests and can end up with a miserable, exhausted child. He received the book and was full of excited chatter about all the things in the book. He has a stutter, but I am pretty sure he said something about where people went to the bathroom in castles - LOL OK LOL Now, when they visit a castle he will already have an understanding of what went on inside. My sister said there were parts that were graphic about how they treated prisoners (mistreated)...he was ok with it, she wanted to move on to something else...but that's the point. There was plenty for all - adults evidently learned a great deal and he loved it. I was SO pleased to hear his little high voice chattering excitedly about it...he often just says a single word and hopes to get off the phone. He doesn't say things to please people...he expresses his views, warts and all...and he love this one!

Our young 11-year old cousin has an elevated reading level, so we decided to make this a gift to him to see what he thinks. It's something he can enjoy now with all the pictures but also grow with (since there is so much text, history bits, and architecture). My husband really liked the book and was tempted to keep it - ha!

The labeled pictures are great for understanding what was going on.

I bought this for my nephew. Among all the cross section books, he seemed to like this the most. I kind of liked it the most too. There's something fun about looking inside an old castle. It not only shows sections, but it covers how a castle functioned. If you're deciding which cross section book to get, I'll say get this one.

Each page is packed with information about how people lived in castles. Biestey's illustrations are absurdly detailed and very clever. It's a joy to read for pleasure, even as an adult. One word of warning though; there are a few fairly gory scenes, so some people may feel it's not appropriate for children. To be fair, punishment could be extremely brutal in those times, and a half-page isn't much when only describes some of the barbaric acts committed in the name of medieval justice.This is probably one of my favorite books, and I intend to read it a few more times before consigning it to the coffee table. The only thing that really upset me about this book was that it eventually ended.

This book is a great learning tool for kids who love castles and history. We are fortunate to have had the chance to take the children to Germany and this book helped them better understand the bergs, schlosses and ruins we visited. They now know they would not want to live in a castle.

Great even for young children.

good detailed book. easy reading, yet very informative. Perfect for my gradeschool niece.

When one is facing a new diagnosis of diabetes it can be terrifying. The simple joy found in eating can loom in front of you like a dreaded chore instead of a time of delicious enjoyment. Worry can consume you all day about carbohydrates you've eaten- too much or not enough. Blood glucose levels out of control don't help get your A1C in the range it should be. We understand. We went through this after my husband was diagnosed with diabetes. Of Cuban Italian descent, he loved his pasta, breads and sweet desserts. Suddenly these treasured foods became the enemies. We had to completely overhaul our cooking and meal design. It was an overwhelming and trying time until a dietitian recommended this book. The worry, the fears and the confusion gradually faded into the background as we taught ourselves a new and improved way to cook and eat. It's been over five years since his diagnosis and this book is still a treasured reference to make healthy meals. I recommend it to anyone with diabetes and/or heart disease.

This set of recipes are basically good. For me the need to combine low sodium and low carb will require adapting many of the recipes. However, most are adaptable. Most of the adapting comes with the sodium side. By using appropriate substitute ingredients the higher sodium levels can be brought down. Published in 2014 I was surprised that the "heart healthy" aspect of the recipes were not more considerate of the 1500 mg per day limit recommended for persons with heart conditions. With an average of 450 mg. per meal (leaving 150 for snacks) some of the single meal items would quickly push a meal over the 450 mg limit. With diabetics needing an evening snack, the 150 mg. limit would also not leave much room for some of those food items. Overall the book provides valuable food preparation possibilities and is certainly worth the money. I borrowed a copy from our public library and reviewed and tested some of the recipes, then decided it was a good buy.

my younger sister suffered a heart attack. She is also diabetic. I sent this book to her when she got home from the hospital. She has been trying some of the recipes and is enjoying a more healthy diet.

Have found that recipes by the Heart Association are creative & delicious. This collaboration with the Diabetes Association proves to offer the same. It can be a challenge to prepare creative and tasty meals ( preferring a minimum of red meat) now that I am also pre-diabetic but this cookbook certainly helps. With adherence to diet, I hope to reverse pre-diabetes and nip it in the bud.

good and easy recipes with easy-to-find ingredients. first borrowed it from the library and had to have my own copy.

My younger sister who is diabetic suffered a heart attack not long ago. I wanted to help. I looked for a cookbook that could help her eat better for her heart while keeping her blood sugar levels at acceptable ranges

I have made about a dozen recipes in this cookbook and so far, so good. Not the most innovative cookbook I have ever had, but the recipes are fairly simple and quick to make.

Use this daily since my husband was diagnosed with heart failure. He has to watch his sodium closely and these recipes are all low sodium but made flavorful with herbs an spices that are sodium free.
