The 19thc war in Zululand includes much more than the British disaster at Isandlwana or the engagement at Rorke's Drift. A series of battles and engagements took place through out the war encompassing two campaigns. Author, Ron Lock examines each one and in a succinct yet satisfying manner gives a fine account. One finds heroics and "stupidity" through out and it becomes clear the author has a critical opinion of British "field leadership", though certainly not for the rank and file. The author conversely gives praise to Zulu tactics as responsible for their own victories. The second battle of Hoblane was the most serious British defeat after Isandlwana yet forgotten with the joy of the victory of Khambula March 29th 1879. Khambula did not capture the British public's attention as it was what was expected of their army. What present student of this war can not be drawn to Gingindlovu? {known to troops and civilians as gin gin I love you! Again forgotten. The author wisely and creatively ends each chapter with an evaluation of the engagements and includes his thoughts as to why same have been forgotten.I found it surprising that, per the author, Chelmsford's victory at Ulundi was in actuality not the "end" for the Zulu and in point of fact hostile Zulu impis in significant numbers remained in the field. Chelmsford had been relieved of his command and General Sir Garnet Wolseley arrived as replacement. Lord Chelmsford knew of this and with due haste before Wolseley could take command, sought what he could describe as a victory, salvaging his reputation after Isandlawana. Wolseley "finished the job".Mr Lock provides a chapter on the defeat of African King Sekhukhune and the Pedi nation in November 1879. This chief had been the main concern of the British well before the Zulu nation. This seeming a bit out of place but one can argue the point.Lastly an end chapter on those pesky Boers and the opening of the First Boer War with the their shameful ambush while under their own white flag of a column of the 94th regt. {2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers}. The 94th saw action against Zulu, Pedi and Boer before leaving South Africa. Again seemingly out of place unless one wishes to draw campaign continuity for this regiment. The final chapter for some reason reverts back to Rork's Drift and a perhaps not too cynical thought that too much was and is made of same.Contention is that the fight had no military campaign importance, but rather served as an attempt to sooth the ache of Isandlwana. I believe one cannot whether correct or not, deny the courage and tenacity shown in defending the mission behind "mealie bags".Maps are good and footnotes are annotated and the appendices are informative. While some will argue conclusions few I believe in allhonesty can deny this book's efforts.
The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 is probably one of the more memorable of the series of Queen Victoria's "little wars" that took place in the 19th Century, in large part due to the popularity of the movies "Zulu" and "Zulu Dawn", which dealt with the battles of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana, respectively. This book doesn't cover those engagements as they really deserve books of their own (Ian Knight, Mike Snook and Adrian Greaves have all written separate and excellent accounts of these battles), as the author focuses on other battles from the war that are little remembered today. He does an excellent job, and his post-script to each battle where he describes the current condition of and access to these various battlefields is very interesting. A great read if you want an overview of the Anglo-Zulu War, and an equally great and similar work is Ian Knight's "Great Zulu Battles".
Brings together the causes and results of the Zulu War. Shows the Zulu people as freedom fighter as opposed to savages .
