I liked this book because there were interesting details in it. However, the author's obsession with a channeled text called OASPHE (which she references repeatedly throughout the book) made it less reliable. I did actually decide to fact check some of the claims made by the author and found that they were not credible. The "white Indians" in South America were not/are not truly white people, but instead are albinos. This is clear if you look at the pictures available on the Internet in a simple Google search. However, I could find some things to substantiate other claims, such as DNA evidence of European haplogroups in the current Native American population as well as in ancient burial sites. Some of the claims made about the Pacific islanders seemed plausible. Anyway, it was still an interesting book but just not completely believable.

Thoroughly fascinating and impossible to put down-- I read it in a couple of hours and was left wanting more. The author is among my favorites and her knack for thorough, tireless research did not disappoint. The only thing I question is the channeled info... I'm not entirely sure what to make of it... All in all I highly recommend this book!!

The research in this book is worth of a Nobel Prize. Jam packed with extremely well organized and fascinating details. This is good enough for any professor as a reference book and can be good for any newcomer layperson interested in the subject. The breakthroughs from this piece of work are useful to many other researchers for their connections to history such as Ralph Ellis.Absolutely marvelous.

This book is not scientific, and has no peer review.The author has repeatedly published "alternate facts," that have no basis in reality or scientific investigation. The case for a submerged continent is as old as the Bible, and just because it is OLD, does not make it REALITY.She styles herself as an expert in, "ALTERNATIVE ARCHAEOLOGY," which is all you need to know.Perhaps, FAKE ARCHAELOLGY would be a suitable YOUTUBE channel for this MINDLESS dribble.

About the Author

Frances K. Pohl is the Dr. Mary Ann Vanderzyl Reynolds Professor of Humanities and Professor of Art History at Pomona College in Claremont, California. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Since moving to Pomona in 1985, she has taught a wide variety of courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century North American art. Her work has focused on the art of the United States, in particular the work of Ben Shahn, about whom she has written two books, and the relationship between the visual arts and working-class culture. Professor Pohl has taught in the United States for many years, but her Canadian origins give her a unique continental perspective on American art.

I teach an Art in the Americas course that ranges from the time of Western contact (Cortez's invasion of Mexico) through the end of the 20th century. This is the course text I use. The book closely connects art of all kinds (paintings, sculpture, architecture, other created items that are lumped under the term "material culture") with social and cultural history of the Americas. The focus is broader in the earlier chapters but narrows to the U.S. in the later chapters.The illustrations are large, pretty true to actual colors and plentiful - thus the higher price. The text is clearly written, chronologically organized and detailed. Covering 500 years of art and its plentiful illustrations, it is a large book. The paper used is heavy, calendared (glossy) stock so the book is heavy as well. The shipping weight is 5 pounds. But worth the cost and the wear and tear on your backpack.The price charged on Amazon is sometimes as little as half what college bookstores charge so I recommend getting it here rather than on campus.

Definitive. The book is huge and expensive -- but great pictures which, of course, increases the cost. There are other books on the history of American art, most dealing with more specific issues, but this one is the best I've read on general themes. Artists and art movements are discussed in terms of the social and cultural climate of the time.-- quite valuable. There is also extensive coverage of Mexican and Native American art, both as independent genres but also as they affected and were affected by more mainstream currents. Frankly I skipped over a lot of this because it has limited interest for me, but it's there should my cultural biases get overcome. Also covers domestic art (e.g. quilts, sampler, etc.) as well as furniture, photography and architecture -- again skip-able if one wants to make headway in this gigantic book.This is not bedtime reading, but given the scope and complexity, it is quite readable.

This is required reading for my Art History class. At over 550 pages my initial reaction was a groan..I am delighted that my dread was unfounded. It presents the connections between works of artists and the society in which they are created. While it is a college textbook, it has a wealth of information on the art movements in America, and is a realatively easy read. Rich in illustration and color plates even those only moderatly interested in art should find something of value without reading anyting more than captions.

This textbook was required for my upper-division general education requirement and it was a very useful and informative textbook. I actually enjoyed reading the assigned readings and interpreting the various pieces of art in it. Highly recommend for any professor considering this for an art history course or any art student!

Wow! Another incredible book published by Thames and Hudson! I love their art compendiums. Here, the author gives us a Canadian viewpoint on US history that is erudite and fascinating. Huge detailed book yet quite refreshing to read. I'm using it in a History of American Art from a Multicultural Perspective class. Lots of history and beautifully detailed artworks, including timelines. The printing is superb (Singapore). I highly recommend it! Great reading and a wonderful addition to your home library.

The Symposium is what it is: a classic of western culture. So, when one offers a review, it's not about the text itself (I think) but for the translation, presentation and notes. So: Wakefield's translation is the smoothest I've read of this great text. His modern English makes the homoerotic context of the dialogue clear, for one thing. I've taught this text to sleepy undergrads who were clueless about the terms "lover" and "beloved" in the speeches, assuming they were about a boy and a girl. But the notes are where Wakefield really shines. Wakefield gives not only a readable account of each of the speeches, a special discussion of love in Greek thought, and a literary analysis, but also a useful set of notes at the end. Over all, this is so much better than the tired British translations we used to read in college back in the old days.

In this review I will compare 5 translations of Plato's Symposium:1. Alexander Nehamas & Paul Woodruff (Hackett Pub Co, 1989).2. Benardete (University of Chicago Press, 2001).3. R.E. Allen (Yale University Press, 1993).4. Shelley's Translation (St Augustine Press, 2002)5. Sharon (Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co, 1997)I have given all translations 5 stars for their own unique perspectives. Each of these editions has its own strengths and weaknesses, and because of this, none of this edition is complete in itself. Inevitably, if you are serious in undertaking this work, you need to pick up more than one edition. I will give a recommendation on which one to use, at the end of this review.Symposium consists of a series of speeches on love (Eros), culminating in Socrates' and then Alcibiades'. What I am looking for is, first, ease of understanding the central concept of the book, this is obtained through different types of translations. My bias is toward a translation that is fluid, natural, and conveys the concept in a straight forward way. Second, I am also looking for helpful insights and philosophical explanations of some key thoughts. You get this from the quality of commentary/notes as part of the book.Both Sharon's and Nehamas' editions are similar in their lucid, straightforward, and current translations. I find that these 2 editions to be the best and easiest in understanding the text. On the translation side, I give these 5 stars. However, the commentaries in both editions are basic, and unsatisfying in my mind. For this, I give 4 stars.Benardete's edition has a superb commentaries both written by him and another (which is the gem here) written by Allan Bloom. You may or may not like Bloom's style, but he does give you a lot of background especially in ancient Greek pederasty culture, and valuable insights in each of the speeches. I give this a 5 star. I will recommend buying this book just for those 2 commentaries. On the translation itself, however, I am not a fan of Benardete's style. I have commented this in other reviews for his other translations, especially the "Sophist". For some reason, I find it more complex, long winded, and harder to understand. For this I give this edition translation 4 stars only.Allen's edition is superb for both translation and commentaries; this is a 5 star book for me.Finally, on Shelley's translation: this is a unique edition for a couple of reasons. It is a translation of a masterpiece work, by a master in literature himself, Percy Shelley. So, you are reading not only Plato's works, but also a work by one of the most influential literary figure in the English world. Secondly, there is an extensive commentary by David O'Connor, not only on the Symposium, but also on Shelley's process and motivation of doing the translation. A superb edition.My final recommendation: pick up either Sharon or Nehamas' book (personally I prefer Sharon's, it is beautifully done) for the translation, and then pick up Stanley Rosen's "Plato's Symposium" for the commentary (I have a separate review for this superb book). However, if you must read 1 and only 1 book, I would stay with Allen's.

Hackett Publishing puts out the preeminent translations/versions of the classics. The introductions, footnotes and line references allow for thorough reading/engrossment of the texts. I have a large collection of Hackett books and I was not disappointed by this one. Whether you are taking a class or reading on your own turn to these texts over other versions. You will NOT be disappointed. I recommend this book (version) without reservation.

The one start is for this particular edition not for the book itself. The edition does not have numbered paragraphs. I need this book for a class, and we need paragraph numbers to properly cite the text in essays. It was a complete waste of time for me to read this edition and make notes in it, and then have to look at another edition to get the paragraph numbers for citation purposes. When my professor referred to certain passages of the text in class, I could not follow along. My professor says that this usually happens when students get their books from Amazon instead of the editions she picked out that are on shelf of the campus bookstore! Regrettable mistake on my part.

With this I read the Hackett edition and I was pleased with it. Unlike many of their other Plato editions, this one had a decent amount of footnotes and a great introduction, with an easy to read translation.I knew beforehand that this book contained dialogues about Euros, but I didn't realize that with many of the dialogues the love is referring to pederasty, I should have guessed from some of the interactions with other Plato dialogues. To someone like myself from a different time and culture this was slightly disturbing at first, but once I got past my own opinions, this was actually a great dialogue. I did wonder how this dialogue was so well copied throughout the Catholic middle ages, one would think that it would get swept under the rug like so many other documents, but perhaps because its Socrates or just because its good, it got a pass. I think its among the best of the Plato dialogues I've read, it seems more lively and entertaining than some of the others.In this, men at a symposium sit around making speeches in praise of love. I don't remember the first ones very well, but the later ones were pretty good. I liked the popular one by Aristophanes where he tells of a love creation type of myth were people at one time had double the body parts but were separated into two by a god, then they search for their other half. I think my favorite part though happened at the end where Alcibiades comes in drunk and tells stories about Socrates, it gives another dimension to the man and made me appreciate him more (his apology was even more effective when I read it after this).
