This book, to me, represents an example of good potential wasted. Here's why.First off, the writing is often clunky and awkward, especially when it comes to descriptions. "Cara mentally blew dust off long-forgotten faces." "All the eligible men chased her. They swirled around her like minnows after bread thrown in the water." The author tries hard and fails, often coming up with unintentionally funny metaphors. Another problem is the use of modern American slang in Victorian England (a steampunk version of England, but still). Examples include using "invite" as a noun; "pants" instead of "trousers"; and phrases like "i have to get going" and "daddy issues". I encountered all these midway into the second chapter. If you are writing a period book of any kind, please, for the love of God, at the very least use proper vocabulary. If you've ever read a decent historical book, or even worse, actual classical literature, these modernisms will be, at the very least, incredibly jarring.I also wonder about the author's choice (a very common and predictable one in urban fantasy literature these days) to make her heroine a victim of sexual abuse. It's a pretty tired choice, but if done right, it can work. In this case, there are many inconsistencies in how the heroine behaves, considering her past.Overall, I got the impression that the author did some perfunctory research into the subjects and characters of her book, and that lack of depth is clearly felt. I have to compliment the author on the choice of cover art - it's gorgeous and eye catching. Unfortunately, the same amount of attention and time clearly wasn't spent on finding an editor, who I'm sure could have given the author some direction, and the book, some much-needed polish.

This story and the characters in it were so flat and cliched that reading through the book was literally a chore. I read through the first several chapters hoping to eventually feel some connection to Cara (or anyone else in the story), or to feel some apprehension or interest in her mission but it never happened. Cara's character felt completely contrived and lifeless. Not that the other characters were NOT contrived and lifeless, but as the main character I think it is especially egregious that Cara is so unlikable. I can tell that you're supposed to view her as a tough, spunky independent woman but her actions throughout the book are so completely contrary to this posturing that her personality collapses. The plot is so weak that it gets completely overwhelmed by the ridiculous forays into shirtless underground boxing dates and the like. I was so thoroughly underwhelmed by the plot and characters that now, barely a week after finishing the book, I can hardly remember what occurred in the story. There's a girl who meets a guy, plus some murders that feature both an uninteresting murderer and an uninteresting detective. That's about it.Far more than the gory murders, I was shocked by the indelicacy with which the main character's history of abuse was handled. Her abuse as a child is used as a plot device with seemingly little regard for the experiences of readers or even of the character herself. Cara's personality, already underdeveloped, becomes totally defined by her abuse and then by her relationship with a controlling man. The author wants to portray Cara as a strong, independent survivor and instead turns her into a frail, damaged female who needs validation of her own self-worth through sex with some hot, rich "bad boy" type. This is not only a completely unrealistic portrayal of recovery, it's unhealthy. Rape is not a plot device, and an evening or two of passionate sex can't heal such deep trauma. If you can't write about physical and sexual abuse in a mature, empathetic way you probably shouldn't include it in your story at all.

Ms. Exley,With just one book, I have become a fan. So much so that I immediately bought the 4-book series, and I almost never pay for books on Kindle.I especially enjoy the characters and the relationship that Cara has with each of them in turn. I especially like Jackson, Miguel, and Hawke, and the way Cara handles each of them in turn.The story takes turns one could not have predicted or expected, and I like that. As a fellow author on Kindle, I only wish I could be as inventive and creative as you are!Are there a few errors? Sure, but they are minor and very few and far between. Is there too much narrative on occasion? Yes, but only on occasion, and the rest of the book handily makes up for those passages. No author is perfect, people, but Ms. Exley has done a fine job with this book and deserves praise for tackling such a technically and emotionally complex book.There are few books that I eagerly return to each night and this was one of them, and I would rate Hatshepsut's Collar just as highly.Thank you for these books. I will look forward to each new one.
