Reading this book, the third of four, is best done after reading the first two. You will be lost as there are a great many characters and subplots to follow. This is a great series. It has everything, plot, action, philosophy, depth of characterization. It will appeal to all, children and adults, who have a love of dragon lore. Saphira, the primary dragon in the tale, is witty, wonderful and wise. She is also a dangerous predator who happens to have bonded with her human rider and together they make a formidable pair of heroes. There is good and evil but the author has shown us how the line between the two is very blurred. As in real life, the humans, dwarves, elves and other creatures are a mixture of good and bad often acting out of necessity under pressure to survive.

I chose 5 stars because the book was complete. Everything that had been a cliff hanger in Eldest was answered in brisingir. I really liked the feeling the author put into the book. It feels like your the one being torn between oaths, your the one who travels around everywhere. And finally, I loved this book because you get to experience what courage really is. You get to feel how difficult it is when Roran is proving himself to the Varden, and how he must be brave and just do it. All in all, this book was fabolous!

This book picks up right where Eldest left off. Roran trying to rescue Katrina. Will he be able to save her? Is Sloane still alive.Eragon and Saphira are training so they will be better equipped to fight when the time comes.I love Eragon and Saphira but I found myself skimming some of the parts with Roran and Katrina. There is so much going on in these books. I don't want to give anything away. Some of my favorite quotes." I know what we do is right, but right doesn't mean easy.""The monsters of the mind are far worse than those that actually exists. Fear, doubt, and hate have hamstrung more people than beast ever have.""Love can be a terrible curse, Eragon. It can make you overlook even the largest flaws in a person's behavior."

I remember waking up Christmas morning, 2008, running downstairs and seeing this book lying on the arm of our couch. Man was I ecstatic!! As soon as we were finished opening presents, I immediately ran up to my room and began reading it. This was a really good story. It, like Eldest, took me a little while to read, but not as much time. Like Eragon, I read it every chance I got. Granted, it was long, but I loved it all the same. Christopher Paolini is a very talented author! I like his writing style. I still remember when this series was all the rage when I was younger. It is a great book for fantasy lovers.

For his age this writer does an exzeptional job and hope he comes out with another series. This kept me wanting to keep on reading and not stopping until finished. But with the large volume of pages to read takes a while to finish. Prepare yourself for an excellent book and would compare him to R A Salvatore.

"Brisingr" is the third book in "The Inheritance Cycle", and in some regards I enjoyed it more than the previous two books because it seems like there is some hope for Eragon in his upcoming battle against Murtagh and King Galbatorix. The story did seem to drag at times dealing with Dwarven politics, Roran's rise in the Varden, etc.I liked that this book delved deeper into Eragon's character as he questions his theological beliefs, he explores his thoughts on judging others, he learns more about his family line, and he engages in a short quest to obtain a sword worthy of a Dragon Rider!Overall, the Eragon books take a lot from other works (e.g., Lord of the Rings, The Earthsea Cycle, etc.), but I find them enjoyable. They present good, clean epic fantasy for young adult readers.

I have loved this series since book one. I see that there is a lot of hate for this series. I can see why. It is predictable in most of its broad story movements. What keeps me going here is I love the moral dilemmas that the characters endure. Put simply I love the characters from this series. That is why this series appeals to me so much. They grow, they learn, they have become my friends. This one is a lot more violent than the last two. It makes this book a lot more brutal than Eldest and Eragon. I felt the stakes were higher.I can tell that he has grown as a writer. This isn't the same kid that wrote Eragon. I know this series fails to please everybody. It does please me. Can't wait to start book four and see what fate has in store for my friends.

Another wonderfully-woven tale of the land of Alagaesia from Christopher Paolini. Eragon's character is given much more depth and purpose, as is Roran's, and we are given much more information on the history of the Dragon Riders, specifically Brom, Morzan and Galbatorix. Spahira's character is fleshed out further and we are given a greater insight into the bond between Dragon and Rider. A hero's quest continues, his own past and destiny questioned, and edging ever closer is the inevitable confrontation with the evil Galbatorix. Paolini has done an absolutely wonderful job with this series thus far and I almost cannot wait for the final entry, though I am sad to see the series ending. I highly recommend this book as well as its two predecessors, "Eragon" and "Eldest", for fantasy and adenture fans; you won't be disappointed. Paolini is a storyteller the likes of which does not come along but once, maybe twice, in a single generation, and not a word of his is to be cast aside.

I read many versions, but they all seemed intent on rewriting the words to fit into sentence structure of the English language, thereby creating a inaccurate literal translation. 12 cup of flour in a cake and 1/2 cup, they look very similar, but they are far apart in truth. The Gita is about secrets and if you don't have the real, literal word translation you are not going to get what you should be reading the Gita for. So it's still not pure translation, for it adds many words that are in other English translations and when you compare actual sanskrit to it, you can see much is added to it to make it read like a story. So, while its a good translation, like most it still is full of additives ("Prince") and such to make it more familiar and read as a interesting story. Fosse explains in the preface his choice of translation of the words Sattvas, Rajah, Tamah, and as these are the building block words of Eastern thought, most already know them well, or else they should, so I would have preferred they were left in as much as the word "Karma" was left unchanged the majority of his text.Personally I prefer very precise literal translation but have yet to find one.the sanskrit of bg 1:10 reads as:अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम्पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम्oraparyāptaṁ tadasmākaṁ balaṁ bhīṣhmābhirakṣhitamparyāptaṁ tvidameteṣhāṁ balaṁ bhīmābhirakṣhitamit looks like 8 words except you have compounds which must be broken apart, which equal 13 words, though four are repeated such example as Balam which is "Strength".aparyāptam—unlimited; tad—that; or which asmākam—ours; balam—strength; bhīṣhma—Bheeshma; abhirakṣhitam/kingdomparyāptam—limitedtv or (tu)—but; idam—this; eteṣhām—theirbalam—strength;bhīma—Bheem; abhirakṣhitam/kingdomunlimited is-our strengthBhismas-Kingdombut-theirslimited is-the strengthBheemas-kingdomFosse translates it as:"That force, protected by Bhima, is not a match for us, but this force, protected by Bhishma, is a match for them."So, all in all it's a fairly tight rendering though it still commits the horrid transposing of the two subjects, speaking first of the negative, followed by the positive, which if it was a dire matter of electric or dare I say alchemical connectivity it would be erroneous.

This translation is one of many which have recently been made, and there have been literally hundreds of translation of this classic. This is the third translation of the Gita I have read. To be honest, overall I prefer the language and style of these other translators (Georg Feuerstein and Stephen Mitchell). Eman Nep's example in his review illustrates well that the language in this translation sounds a bit awkward in some places.I have also read G. Thompson's review of this book, and he says indeed that Fosse's "English is clearly not that of a native speaker" and "often sounds awkward". The review also notes that Sanskrit terms and names are not transcribed correctly. The introduction is rather short for such a text, there are also no footnotes and no bibliography. For casual readers this book may be okay, but personally I'd rather recommend instead the translations by Feuerstein or Mitchell.

Which edition of the Bhagavad Gita should I read? This is one of those questions that may face one in their study of Hinduism. Do I go with a translation that is more literal but hard to read? Or do I go with a translation that "flows" better but may compromise the original intent and meaning?Having read only one other edition of the Gita (Easwaran), I'd have to say that this edition falls somewhere in the middle.LIKES:First and foremost, although I can't read a bit of Sanskrit, I always appreciate editions that include the text in its original language. If I ever did want to do a further study on, say, the origins or meaning of a specific word, I can now do so.I also appreciate the absence of footnotes as it makes for a less jarring reading experience--having to stop every few seconds for more clarification is not my idea of fun reading. As for the translation itself, I can't speak for how well or accurately it captures the sense of the original, but I can tell you that it was a very easy read, which most Hindu texts are not. Finally, the glossary at the end is always a welcome sight.DISLIKES:Although I like the spartan style of this book, there were a couple areas where I felt improvements could have been made. For one, I wish there were little headings to indicate who was speaking--Arjuna or Krishna. Secondly, for the most part, I felt that this translation was easier to read than Easwaran, however, there were a few cases where the Easwaran translation simply had more "flow" or was easier to follow. Compare these two passages . . ."The self is a friend to that self by which self the self has been conquered. But the self of a man with an unconquered self would act in hostility like an enemy." --Meditation couplet 6; Lars Martin Fosse translation"To those who have conquered themselves, the will is a friend. But it is the enemy of those who have not found the Self within them." --Meditation couplet 6; Eknath Easwaran translationRight away you can see how the Easwaran translation is much easier to follow in this instance. Finally, I disliked the inclusion of the other names of Arjuna and Krishna. I really don't feel that they added much to my understanding of the Gita, in fact, I would say that it was detrimental in that one has to think twice as hard or consult the glossary to figure out who is being referred to.Before giving my overall assessment I'll breakdown a brief comparison of this edition with the Easwaran translation.LARS MARTIN FOSSE TRANSLATION--Easy to read--Original Sanskrit text--Introduction, glossary and index--Simplistic layoutEKNATH EASWARAN TRANSLATION--Generally has more "flow" to it, but probably not as literal as the LMF translation.--Introduction, chapter commentaries, glossary and index.--Indicates who is speaking (Krishna, Arjuna, etc)OVERALL:Between the two, I can't recommend one over the other. One should also bear in mind that with any translated text, it is wise to have MULTIPLE translations to refer to and not just one. For that reason, I think that the Lars Martin Fosse translation, while not perfect mostly on nitpicking grounds, is an excellent addition to one's collection of the Bhagavad Gita.

A great way to teach to a child. Focus on the truths of Jesus and the message of how to follow that message on earth to make this the kingdom of God. Focusing on sin, heaven and hell etc is a sure fire way to guarantee some counseling later in life and does not achieve the desired goal.

Our family has used some great resources (The Jesus Storybook Bible, Starr Meade, etc.), but Enns does such a great job by not only allowing us to read and expound upon a particular passage, but see that text within the grand story of the Bible. This has helped us appreciate how Jesus not only sits at the center of Scripture, but also stands as the purpose and end of every figure, theme and narrative in the Bible.Despite that, Enns doesn't try to do too much. Instead, he works progressively, beginning with Year One and continuing here in Year Two, building an every growing biblical/biblical-theological foundation for my daughters and our family. Buy whatever you can in this series. It's truly worth it!

Makes teaching about the bible easy. The activities are fun.

Peter Enns writes with insight and clarity for children of elementary school age! He appropriately sticks to Jesus stories rather than introducing young children to difficult-to-explain stories like Noah and the Ark. His approach in this series is smack-dab on target for this age group. Raymond Bystrom

We loved the first one and are enjoying this one as well. So very grateful for Enn's method of teaching children. It is just what we were looking for.

"Telling God's Story Year Two: The Kingdom of Heaven" is the second installment of Peter Enns "Telling God's Story" religious curriculum published by Olive Branch Books. Peter Enns holds a Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Literature from Harvard and a master's degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. He has taught in both the university and seminary classrooms. He and his wife Susan live in Pennsylvania and are the parents of three children."Telling God's Story Year Two: The Kingdom of Heaven" is made up of two parts: Instructor Text and Teaching Guide and Student Guide and Activity Pages. For this review, the focus will be on the Instructor Text and Teaching Guide. The "Instructor Text and Teaching Guide" is written in an easy, conversational tone between the author and the reader. The curriculum is organized to allow the participants "to get to know Jesus better," as the author states. The curriculum is divided into eight units: Stories Jesus Told, Miracles Jesus Did, Teachings of Jesus, The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' Early Life, Jesus' Disciples, Opposition to Jesus, and The End of Jesus Life. The author has included an introduction which explains the curriculum's premise and a supplemental lesson titled, "The Rest of the Story." Each lesson contains the Biblical reference which is the basis for the lesson, "What the Parent Should Know", followed by the lesson text."Telling God's Story Year Two: The Kingdom of Heaven" is straightforward, authored in a conversational tone. The curriculum is "ecumenical," appealing to all denominations of the Christian church. Our family has been pleased with Enns' insight and look forward to his next installment in the "Telling God's Story" curriculum.
