I really prefer Dancers Among Us, and not because this is "nudity". While this collection had some beautiful pictures, it was all very "pose-y" in comparison to the first collection because they insisted on covering genitalia. I would've loved to see the dancers truly uninhibited, but I suppose a penis or vagina aren't high brow enough. With everything so staged, I think Dancers After Dark just didn't have the same magic,
The book has a good concept, with dancers staged theatrically in front of architectural landmarks or interesting spots. The dancers are pretty average as dancers go. IF you are using it for references though, I would not pick this book because the lighting washes out the dancers bodies to look flat, and most of the pictures, in order to show the scale of the environment, make the dancers out to be very small in the picture. Other than that, the composition of the dancers is great.

NZ, Australia, Indonesia, Africa, Russia, Japan, ...Nice to see explanations of how the dancers were staged, prepared, lit, focus, cropped, ...My favorite is the woman dancer in CA coast at sunset - beautiful setting (beach / rocks / water), sunset colors, dancer pose and poise, ...
Even though the pictured dancers are in superb physical shape, it’s amazing none were injured while striking the athletic poses in, on and around the locations used in the book. Even more amazing, the often quickly-posed photos don’t reveal a single crotch, male or female!The photos are roughly half color, half black & white. Both work and reproduction is excellent. A number of photos are printed across the binding, but generally this doesn’t detract from the image – kudos to the art director. My only complaint, probably echoed by many buying the book, is that it’s too small. Howard Schatz’ similarly-themed “Passion & Line†is a majestic 11x14†and printed on heavy stock. “Dancers After Dark†deserves to be printed larger than a textbook.
Jordan Matter is insane. He is also brilliant, and he knows an awful lot of talented, beautiful, equally insane dancers. And he convinced them to go out into the streets of major cities with him, after dark, and strike stunning poses with no clothes on.They only had one near encounter with police, Matter said, and it ended well.I love this book so much. This is a photography book where it looks like EVERYBODY had fun.These images are amazing. People hanging from lampposts, playing in civic fountains, creating multi-person artistic formations under street lights, and all of it conveying the sheer joys of expressing yourself and getting away with it.You should also check out his site and his YouTube channel for behind-the-scenes videos of some of the shoots.

It is difficult to tear oneself away from one, only to be equally transported by the next. I have just received this book, and have already spent much time reflecting on it: reviewing the compositions, the nature of the light, and the stark and splendid results that Jordan has captured.This book would be an amazing gift for anyone who dances, travels, appreciates beauty, moves, or even just breathes.
I had been watching Jordan's instagram posts for a while so i had an idea what i was in store for, but was blown away with the final results.Ordered the hard cover which comes with an ice sleeve as well. All the pictures are very well done, many are in NYC and many are overseas as well. The pictures are amazing and have a wide variety of scenes. Anywhere from sleek urban settings, to ice water in Colorado. Its also interesting that he time stamps the pictures, so in the city pics you have an idea what would be going on at that time.
Wonderful book. Jordan Matter is amazingly talented. My only complaint is why would Amazon send a softcover book in a plastic bag?? The mailman folded it to fit in the mailbox. Had I not checked the mailbox shortly after it was delivered, the cover would have been ruined.
